A Christmas Message

Posted on 4 December 2012 No Comments yet

God works more slowly than we sometimes imagine. This Christmas time in Church we will remember the creation of the world from its very beginning – with the garden, needing so much work to keep it beautiful. And people, who gave every living thing its name – and naming things well carries the power of love. It has taken us a long time to get to grips with loving this beautiful world, and we’ve made some huge mistakes along the way.

And God does not leap in superhero fashion to put everything right – instead we see Jesus come as a new-born baby, who has to grow up. That takes time – for although the birth at Christmas catches our imagination with the magic of the moment – the true meaning is revealed slowly over thirty-odd years. A whole human life, full of the love which God wants us to have for each other and the world.

For the message of Christmas is about God’s love for us revealed at a human pace, not in magic moments or just on Sundays, but every moment of every day. This season, which we intensify and pressurise with presents and parties and eating and drinking too much – and then the sales – can so easily hide from us that God’s love is not just for Christmas.

It sometimes strikes me at Christmas that God’s great present to the world – Jesus coming as a baby – was missed by most of the people in the busy town of Bethlehem that night.

So enjoy Christmas, and take time, even a moment, to realise once again that God loves you – there’s no better Christmas present than that, and it might even last the whole year.
