Reflecting on Easter

Posted on 4 April 2010 No Comments yet

Our Christmas tree, still ringing with the promise and the celebration of an awaited messiah… became stripped, was made bare and turned into a cross of death and shame.. But renewed again on Easter morning, as a vision of new life, it became adorned with flowers, the bright heralds of a radiant and beguiling spring. New life, new surprises. The promise of hope is renewed again within our hearts…

The Holy Week of Easter is a week of highs and lows – of agony and ecstasy. At one point great hope in the saving God, next disappointment, confusion, and despair. There is human weakness, and human strength. There is warmth, and compassion, there is loss and betrayal. And all of these human dramas, taking place around the universe-changing cosmic drama that is located in this small patch of land in the middle east.

And it is a drama that finds a focus at the cross – a symbol of Christ’s love and Passion for all people, fully expressed. The cross is where Jesus gives his life, in pain and sorrow, for us and with us. It is this sacrifice of love – this dying with and for all of us – that brings us the glimpse, the whisper, the tantalising promise of new life, of new beginnings, of new hope…

Our Christmas tree cross, covered with flowers, was the perfect visual aid for this great season of Easter.
