Our "Little Churches" - Extended Communion to the Elderly
Members of St Mary's and St Barnabas Church provide Holy Communion services on a regular basis at many of
the complexes for the elderly and infirm in and around Thatcham. These complexes vary from warden-controlled
residences to care homes for the totally dependant. Many of the elderly grew up as regular church attendees, and
so it is much appreciated that they are still able to worship regularly with others. There are many smiles and
much quiet satisfaction is seen from those receiving communion or a blessing.
There are usually at least 2 members of the congregation who accompany and help a member of the clergy, although
through our Discipleship programme it has become possible for
those other than the full-time clergy to perform the service. This has enabled us to reach more of those unable to
attend services at the church building.
At these "Little Churches" there may be 2 or 3, or 22 or 23 people worshipping together regularly. It is not
just the clergy from the church visiting; it is the church going out into the community. The Church is the people;
they are the Body of Christ, and so every time one of these "Little Churches" meets - it is the Body of Christ in
that place.
Please contact the Parish Office if you, or anyone you know,
would like to participate, either as a helper or as a resident.
